The Carolina Hurricanes have signed centre Jay McClement to a two-year contract extension worth an average annual value of $1.2 million.

McClement, 31, has scored six goals and 12 assists in 61 games with the Hurricanes this season.

He signed a one-year deal with the Hurricanes prior to the 2014-15 season and was eligible to become and unrestricted free agent at season’s end.

A veteran of 10 NHL seasons, McClement has scored 81 goals and 141 assists in 743 career games with the Hurricanes, St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche and Toronto Maple Leafs. He was originally selected in the second round (57th overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Blues.

The defensively-responsible centre has garnered votes for the Frank J. Selke Trophy in four seasons, finishing sixth in voting for the League’s top two-way forward award in the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season.
