Things might have gotten from bad to worse Sunday afternoon for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Starting pitcher J.A. Happ left in the fifth inning against the Baltimore Orioles due to a left elbow soreness.

With the game scoreless in the fifth, Happ threw a ball to Orioles hitter Adam Jones and was noticeably uncomfortable immediately afterwards. The 34-year-old lefty was taken out of the game in favour of Joe Biagini.

Before the injury, Happ was cruising along, allowing just four hits and no runs with three strikeouts over 4.1 innings pitched.

Happ is coming off a career season in 2016, posting a 20-4 record with a 3.18 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP over 195 innings pitched. The American is signed with the Blue Jays through 2018 and is making $13 million per season.

The 2-10 Jays are already hurting with third baseman Josh Donaldson and ace Aaron Sanchez on the disabled list.

Toronto lost the game 11-4.
