Monday's loss to the Winnipeg Jets may have been Ottawa Senators defenceman Erik Karlsson's final game of the season.

Karlsson, who caused a stir when he retreived the game puck from the Senators net at the end of Monday's 6-5 loss, did not practice Tuesday and did not travel on the team's flight to Buffalo for the start of their final three-game road trip.

Senators head coach Guy Boucher said he would leave the decision of whether to play in the final three games in Karlsson's hands, as he has throughout the season. Karlsson would have to travel on his own to join the team on the road trip.

It’s been a tumultuous season for Karlsson, who missed time at the beginning of the year after ankle surgery. He was the subject of rumours leading up to the trade deadline, with winger Bobby Ryan saying afterwards that he and Karlsson thought they had been traded at one point. Most recently, Karlsson spent time away from the team last month to mourn the loss of his son.

The 27-year-old has nine goals and 62 points in 71 games with the Senators this season. He is set to enter the final year of his contract next season and his future in Ottawa remains murky.

The Senators visit the Sabres on Wednesday night, followed by games against the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
