Cody Franson is getting closer, but still may miss Saturday's game for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Franson practiced with the team Friday but his status for Saturday's tilt with the Pittsburgh Penguins is still unclear as he recovers from a bruised knee. Head coach Randy Carlyle said Sunday's game against the New York Rangers may be a more realistic option for the defenceman.

Carlyle also addressed Dion Phaneuf's switch to the left side this season.

"I don't think it's really that difficult, personally," Carlyle said, adding the switch will likely remain.

Richard Panik also practiced with the Leafs for the first time, replacing Matt Frattin on a line with Peter Holland and Daniel Winnik.
