Misfits Academy defeated Fnatic Academy 3-2 to earn a spot in the 2017 European League Championship Series Summer Split on Thursday, only to be joined by their opponents in promotion a day later.

Fnatic made easy work of former LCS squad Giants Gaming in a 3-0 series victory on Friday to secure place of their own in the EU LCS Summer Split.

However, due to a change in regulation, the 2017 EU LCS Spring Split was the last to allow sister teams to compete in the top-tier League of Legends competition. This means both Misfits Academy and Fnatic Academy will have to sell their positions ahead of the start of the split.

Misfits Academy also defeated Giants 3-1 in the opening round of the promotion tournament.

Misfits Academy earned a shot at promotion with a stunning upset of former LCS club FC Schalke 04 in the Challenger Series playoffs. Misfits Academy finished fourth in the CS Spring regular season with a 1-2-2 record while Fnatic Academy was second with a 2-1-2 record.

Both Giants and Origen were relegated to the EU CS for the Summer Split.
