It’s video game day on the NHL Play of the Year showdown.

Or, at least that’s what today’s match-up between Gustav Nyquist and Steven Stamkos would have you believe… pure video game stuff.

Nyquist’s effort for the Wings is such a long and determined one that the play had to be sped up for time constraints. The crafty Swede held the puck for half a minute, completing two full circuits of the Ottawa Senators zone before finally letting go of the puck. Once he unloaded, the ping of the bar and the bulge of the net told the Sens they had lost before they could even track the shot.

Stamkos loses the distance battle, but he too burned the Senators by taking a lap.

With Kyle Turris hitched to his jersey, the Lightning captain started behind the net, keeping the puck carefully shielded. After towing Turris for an entire lap of the Sens’ goalmouth area, Stamkos finally saw the opening he was looking for and buried a shot past Robin Lehner’s out-stretched glove.
