San Jose Sharks forward Logan Couture will miss Monday's game against the Edmonton Oilers as a result of the concussion he sustained Friday night against the Vancouver Canucks.

Couture was injured in the third period of Friday's overtime loss when he took a high hit from Canucks forward Alexander Burmistrov.

Sharks head coach Pete DeBoer said the 28-year-old remains day-to-day and the team will wait for medical clearance.

“We’ll see how he feels every day and go through that (concussion) protocol, and see where that takes us,” DeBoer told the San Jose Mercury News.

Couture leads the Sharks in both goals and points this season. He's found the back of the net 15 times in 31 games and added 11 assists while averaging 17:59 of ice time per game.

DeBoer said Tomas Hertl, who has spent the season playing on Couture's wing, will move to centre to replace him, with Kevin Labanc and Mikkel Boedker serving as his wingers.

“Anytime you lose a top player like Logan, you hope it’s for a short period of time,” Sharks captain Joe Pavelski said. “If it is a short period of time, it can be beneficial at times. Guys get bigger roles, different situations. But definitely, we’d like to have him in there.”

The Sharks (17-10-4) currently sit third in the Pacific Division with 38 points through 31 games. Following Monday's contest, the Sharks will return home to host the Canucks on Thursday night.
