WCT/CCT Recap: Carruthers wins at Canad Inns
Reid Carruthers and his Winnipeg crew were the big winners this week on the World Curling Tour, capturing the Canad Inns Men's Classic in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.

Canad Inns Men's Classic from Portage la Prairie, MB

Purse: $60,000
Winnipeg's Team Reid Carruthers picked up their first event win of the 2016-17 season thanks to a strong performance at the Canad Inns Men's Classic. The foursome of skip Carruthers, third Braeden Moskowy, second Derek Samagalski and lead Colin Hodgson went 8-2 over the four day event, beating the likes of Kevin Koe, 9-4, in the quarter-final, Shaun Meachem, 4-2, in the semi-final and Charley Thomas in the final, 6-5.
Team Carruthers took home $18,000 for their win, while Thomas' crew grabbed $10,000.
Carruthers won twice last season, including the season-ending Champions Cup on the Grand Slam Circuit.
Other notable names that battled it out in Portage la Prairie included defending champ Steve Laycock of Saskatoon (lost in to Thomas in semis), John Morris (lost in quarters), Brad Jacobs (lost in quarters), Brendan Bottcher (4-3, failed to make playoffs), Matt Dunstone (2-3, failed to make playoffs) and Mike McEwen (3-3, failed to make playoffs).
Hub International Crown of Curling from Kamloops, BC

Purse: $26,000
Team Dean Joanisse won all five of its game to take the title in Kamloops. Skip Joanisse, alongside third Paul Cseke, second Jay Wakefield and lead John Cullen downed Dylan Johnston of Thunder Bay in the semis, 6-3, before defeating Korea's SooHyuk Kim in the championship game, 6-4. Joanisse tied the game with a single in the eighth then stole two more in the extra end to win the championship.
Team Joanisse were awarded $7000 for their efforts. It's their first victory since winning the Cloverdale Cash Spiel in September 2015.
The 14-rink field featured teams mostly from BC.
Stroud Sleeman Cash Spiel from Stroud, ON
Oct 13-16, 2016
Purse: $12,380
Chad Allen's foursome of third Travis Fanset, second Kurt Armstrong and lead Matt Pretty downed Team Colin Dow of Ottawa in the final, 7-5. The Brantford crew went 7-0 to pick up their first event win of the season.
Codey Maus was the defending champion.
McKee Homes Fall Curling Classic from Airdrie, AB
Oct 14-16, 2016
Purse: $12,000
Team Aaron Sluchinski of Airdrie, AB came close to winning this event for a third consecutive season, but fell to Edmonton's Glen Hansen in the championship game, 8-6.
The 16-rink field teams from Alberta and Yukon.
Thompson Curling Challenge from Urdorf, Switzerland - CCT Event

Purse: $8,800 CHF
Kevin Wunderlin and his Swiss squad took down Yves Hess, also from Switzerland, 6-5, to take the Thompson Curling Challenge.

Hub International Crown of Curling from Kamloops, BC

Purse: $26,000
Team Min Ji Kim of Korea were the last rink standing in Kamloops after beating world silver medalist Satsuki Fujisawa in the final, 6-3.
They took home $7000 for their finish with Team Fujisawa winning $5,000.
Stroud Sleeman Cash Spiel from Stroud, ON

Purse: $7,425
Team Julie Tippin of Ontario defended their championship at the Stroud Sleeman Cash Spiel. The foursome of skip Tippin, third Chantal Duhaime, second Rachelle Vink and lead Tess Bobbie went a perfect 6-0 over the four-day event, beating Megan Balsdon in the final, 8-6.
The 12-rink field featured teams all from Ontario.
Atkins Curling Supplies Classic from Winnipeg, MB

Purse: $17,900
Team Beth Peterson of Winnipeg won $4000 after finishing first at the Atkins Curling Supplies Classic. They beat Janet Harvey in the quarters, Jackie Dewar in the semis and finally defending champion Darcy Robertson in title game, 7-6. The foursome of skip Peterson, third Robyn Njegovan, second Melissa Gordon and lead Breanna Yozenko lost just once all week.
The field featured 21-rinks, mostly from Manitoba.
