Canadian driver Lance Stroll showed well during Friday’s sessions in Round 7 of the FIA European Formula 3 Championship in Zandvoort, Netherlands.
The Prema Powerteam driver was second fastest during free practice, but later dropped off the pace during qualifying for the three-race event.
Stroll, who is coming off an impressive fourth-place finish on the Norisring street circuit in Nuremberg, Germany, in Round 6, will start seventh in a 34-car field for Race 1 on Saturday.
The 16-year-old Montreal native will start fifth in Race 2 and 3, just four-tenths of a second off of the leaders on a tight track that is difficult to pass on.
Italian Antonio Giovinazzi recorded his first pole of 2015 for Race 1, while Stroll’s Swedish teammate Felix Rosenqvist will start from the front row in Race 2. The young Canadian managed to out-qualify championship leader Charles Leclerc, who will start sixth and 10th for both Race 2 and 3.
FIA European Formula 3 is an open-wheel racing series held across Europe. The season is broken down into 11 rounds, with each round consisting of three-race weekends.
It’s a feeder series into Formula 1, and has produced stars like four-time F1 world champion and current Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel. Double world champion Lewis Hamilton is also a graduate.
Stroll sits ninth in the driver championship standings, while Prema Powerteam is on top of the team standings.
