Tom Wilson is coming off the best season of his career and a strong postseason en route to winning the Stanley Cup with the Washington Capitals.
Wilson is a restricted free agent this off-season and Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said signing Wilson is atop his to-do list.
"It's a big priority," MacLellan told NHL.com of re-signing Wilson. "Tom's a big part of our team, a big part of what we got going and our playoff success. So he's No. 1 right now."
The 24-year-old scored 14 goals and posted 35 points in 78 games last season. He added five goals and 15 points in 21 games in the postseason, missing three games due to a suspension for his hit on Pittsburgh Penguins forward Zach Aston-Reese in the second round. Aston-Reese suffered a broken jaw on the hit, which led to Wilson's third suspension since September.
Wilson is arbitration-eligible this summer, but MacLellan said he's hoping to avoid that process and reach a long-term deal with Wilson.
"I would like long-term, but we'll see what his representatives want to do," MacLellan said. "I'd prefer to keep him around for as long as we can."
A native of Toronto, Wilson was drafted by the Capitals in the first round of the 2012 NHL Draft.
