Ed O’Neill is set to play the title role in FX’s limited series, The Sterling Affairs, a six-episode story about the downfall of former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling following his notoriously racist behavior and the team’s drive to win a championship under then-coach Doc Rivers.

O’Neill joins a star cast already headlined by Laurence Fishburne and Jacki Weaver. Fishburne will play the part of Doc Rivers and Weaver will play Sterling’s ex-wife, Shelly Sterling.

The Sterling Affairs is based on the reporting that Ramona Shelburne, who serves as an executive producer, did for the ESPN “30 for 30” podcast of the same name. The series is being written by Gina Welch, who will executive produce alongside Shelburne and Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force. Kevin Bray will direct the first block and will also serve as an executive producer on those episodes.

Sterling lost control of the Clippers in the middle of Doc Rivers’ 2013 playoff run with the team. Amid the power struggle between his wife and his mistress, Sterling was banned from the NBA for life in 2014 after recordings of him making racist comments were made public. The LA Clippers saw very little success overall under Sterling’s ownership of the franchise.

O’Neill, 76, is best known for his performances in the sitcoms Modern Family and Married…With Children. A release date for The Sterling Affairs has not yet been announced although it is reportedly set to premiere in 2023.
