The Montreal Canadiens acquired goaltender Ben Scrivens from the Edmonton Oilers on Monday in exchange for forward Zack Kassian.
Mike Condon and Dustin Tokarski, who was sent to the Canadiens AHL affilaite in St. John's, have been unable to stop the Canadiens' current slide of 10 losses in their last 11 games which has seen them drop to third place in the Atlantic Division.
The 29-year-old Scrivens, who is expected to back up Condon tonight when the Canadiens visit the Lightning in Tampa Bay, is 2-6-1 in 10 games with the Oilers' AHL affiliate in Bakersfield this season with a goals-against-average of 3.47.
In Kassian, the Oilers pick up a rough and tumble forward who is looking to turn his career around as he deals with off-ice issues.
The 24-year-old was placed in the NHL/NHLPA Substance Abuse and Behavioural Health Program in October after suffering a broken nose and a broken foot in a car accident in Montreal.
Upon reinstatement in mid-December, Kassian was placed on waivers but asked not to report to St. John's.
Kassian will report to Bakersfield while the Oilers will retain 24 per cent of Scrivens' salary.
