In an interview with TSN’s Kara Wagland on Wednesday, UFC middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre discussed the illness that currently has him sidelined and whether it could impact his future in the division.

St-Pierre addressed the subject that many have been curious about since his championship victory over Michael Bisping at UFC 217 at Madison Square Garden last month.

“I’m not sure, if I compete, that I will go back to 185. I don’t think so,” said St-Pierre, who was recently diagnosed with colitis.

Sources said that St-Pierre believes his diagnosis could potentially be attributed to a combination of weight gain and stress.

“If I want to go back to compete at 185, I will be eating like I did,” said St-Pierre. “I’ve learned from my mistakes. I don’t think it’s a good thing to force myself to eat to gain muscle mass.”

Prior to the win over Bisping, all of St-Pierre’s UFC success has come at the welterweight division, where he defended the title 10 consecutive times over the division’s top fighters before vacating it in 2013 to take a hiatus from competing.

“I think the body has a natural weight it can perform at its best athletic ability, and for me, the weight that I am now is my perfect weight,” said St-Pierre.

MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani reported Wednesday that the UFC was closing in on finalizing a fight between interim middleweight champion Robert Whittaker and former champion Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 in Perth, Australia.

It’s uncertain if that fight will be for the interim title or if the UFC will decide to strip St-Pierre of the title or have him vacate.
