Toronto Six defender Saroya Tinker of the Premier Hockey Federation has won the 2022 PHF Foundation Award. As part of the award, she will donate $10,000 through the league and partner company Principal to a non-profit of her choosing, which will be Black Girl Hockey Club.

The Foundation Award is given “to the player most actively applying the core values of hockey to her community as well as growing and improving hockey culture.” Throughout the 2021-22 season, Tinker has partnered with local organizations including Black Girl Hockey Club to support young girls and especially Black girls with opportunities and resources in the sport of hockey.

According to their website, Black Girl Hockey Club is a non-profit organization “that focuses on making hockey more inclusive for not only Black women but our family, friends and allies.” On Friday, Black Girl Hockey Club announced the opening of a Canadian arm within their organization.

This is Tinker’s first season as a Toronto Six player. She scored one goal, notched five assists and blocked 39 shots this season. She previously played for the Metropolitan Riveters.

The Toronto Six finished second during the regular season and received a bye to the semifinals, where they were eliminated by the Boston Pride.
