Boston Bruins trade deadline acquisition Marcus Johansson has been diagnosed with a lung contusion and discharged from hospital on Wednesday after taking a hard hit from Carolina Hurricanes forward Micheal Ferland on Tuesday night.

Johansson will be re-evaluated in approximately one week according to the team.

Johansson was injured on his first shift of the game on Tuesday when he was hit by Ferland near the side boards in the offensive zone.

Less than a minute after delivering the hit, Ferland dropped the gloves with Bruins forward David Backes. Ferland landed on top of Backes to end the fight, but left the ice afterwards and did not return due to an upper-body injury.

Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour did not have an update on his status post-game. Backes said he believed Ferland's hit was clean, but said he needed be accountable for throwing it.

"I think it's clean. I think it's hard and clean. It's shoulder-chest and you know, if guys are going to be running at our skilled guys then we have to keep them accountable," Backes said of the fight. "Give credit to him — he obliges and we go at it and you know, I think it was a decent fight. But the hit I think is clean and hard. One of our good skill players gets hurt and I felt it was pretty aggressive and we needed to have an answer for it."

Johansson, 28, has one assist in four games since joining the Bruins last week and 12 goals and 28 points in 52 games this season.

Ferland, 26, has 17 goals and 35 points in 57 games this season.
