As the Calgary Flames retire former captain Jarome Iginla’s No. 12 to the Scotiabank Saddledome’s rafters on Saturday night, his impact on the franchise is undeniable.

Offensively, Iginla is the franchise leader in a number of categories.  He is first in games played (1,219), goals (525), points (1,095) and game-winning goals (83). He also ranks second in assists with 570, to Al MacInnis’ franchise-leading 609.

He is the third player in Flames history to have his number retired by the franchise. His No. 12 will join Lanny McDonald’s No. 9 and Mike Vernon’s No. 30.

Drafted by the Dallas Stars 11th overall in 1995, Iginla famously never suited up for them as he was traded with Corey Millen to the Flames for Joe Nieuwendyk. Iginla’s other NHL stops post-Flames include stints with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings.

Iginla’s individual career numbers are impressive, but how does he stack up against his NHL peers in comparison?

He currently ranks 34th all-time in NHL history in points with 1,300. Iginla is tied for 16th in goals (alongside Avalanche legend Joe Sakic) with 625 and is ninth in game-winning goals with 101. He is also 13th in games played all-time (1,554).

Among right wingers, Iginla is sixth all-time in goals and ninth in assists and points.

Iginla’s trophy case is well-stocked, with two Rocket Richard Trophies (2002, 2004), one Art Ross Trophy (2002) and one Lester B. Pearson Award (2002). He was also named a First Team All-Star on three occasions (2002, 2008 and 2009). He narrowly missed out on a Stanley Cup championship in 2004 after losing in the Final in seven games to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Internationally, Iginla won gold medals with Team Canada at the World Juniors (1996), World Championships (1997), World Cup of Hockey (2004) and two Olympic gold medals (2002, 2010).

Iginla’s legacy in Calgary is secured as his franchise numbers dictate. However, his overall career numbers show that he has earned his place on the NHL’s all-time scoring list as one of the best.
