After a thrilling 4-3 victory in the dying seconds over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday, the Vegas Golden Knights vaulted into a tie for first place in the Pacific Division with 46 points and are on pace to do achieve something no expansion team has done before them.
Since the NHL's first wave of expansion in 1967, no first-year team in NHL history has been so successful to this point in the season. And even if the Golden Knights play .500 hockey the rest of the year, they will be the first expansion team to finish with a winning record.
Led by Jonathan Marchessault’s 31 points, the Golden Knights have had one of the most potent offences in the league, sitting third in the NHL with 3.45 goals scored per game.
Much of the Golden Knights’ success also needs to be attributed to their stellar play on home ice. Vegas is tied for the best home record in the NHL, with a 14-2-1 record at T-Mobile Arena so far this season.
Below is a look at every NHL expansion team's numbers in their first season of play.
