Carey Price has the chance to make more history Friday night. With a win against the Anaheim Ducks, Price would become the winningest goaltender in Montreal Canadiens history with 315 wins, surpassing the 314 of legend Jacques Plante.
In his 12 NHL seasons, Price has played his way into the Habs goaltending record books. In franchise history, he is first in games played (611) and minutes played (36,000+). Price is currently fourth in shutouts with 43, three behind Ken Dryden, and trails Jacques Plante (58) and franchise leader George Hainsworth (75).
Canadiens Franchise Leaders - Goaltenders
Goalie | Years | GP | W | L | OTL/T | SV% | GAA | SO |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Jacques Plante | 1953-63 | 556 | 314 | 133 | 107 | .920 | 2.22 | 58 |
Carey Price | 2008-Present | 611 | 314 | 220 | 67 | .918 | 2.47 | 43 |
Patrick Roy | 1985-96 | 551 | 289 | 175 | 66 | .904 | 2.78 | 29 |
Ken Dryden | 1971-79 | 397 | 258 | 57 | 74 | .922 | 2.24 | 46 |
Bill Durnan | 1944-50 | 383 | 208 | 112 | 62 | N/A | 2.36 | 34 |
Among active goalies, he ranks seventh in games played, wins and saves. Every goalie ahead of Price started their NHL careers at least two years before him.
Prior to Price being drafted fifth overall in the 2005 NHL draft, the Habs had used 11 different goalies over nine seasons since the 1995 trade that sent Patrick Roy to the Colorado Avalanche.
In 2014-15, Price cleaned up at the NHL Awards by taking home the Hart Trophy, Vezina Trophy, Ted Lindsay Award and William M. Jennings Trophy (shared with Corey Crawford of the Chicago Blackhawks) after leading the league in wins (44), save percentage (.933) and GAA (1.96). Price is just the second player in Habs history to win four NHL awards in one season, the other being Guy Lafleur in 1977.
Price has also won three gold medals while representing Team Canada internationally. A Stanley Cup would further cement Price’s legacy in Montreal, as many of his legendary predecessors have multiple championships to their names.
If his health holds up and he plays out the entirety of his eight-year contract, Price has the opportunity to be the benchmark for future Habs goalies as he continues to set records and make history as one of the best to wear the bleu, blanc et rouge.
